Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
