EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
